Our smoked salt is made of table salt. (Table) salt is sodium chloride; it is stated in one publication of  Havard medical school that: “It’s the sodium in salt that causes most of the problems. One teaspoon of sodium chloride ” table salt ” contains 2,300 milligrams (mg) of sodium.”

Our body needs salt for two main reasons. It’s needed to transmit nerve impulses, and it is needed to help muscle function; contract and relax muscle fibers. The most important muscles in our body are the muscles in the blood vessels and heart.

The human body uses salt to balance fluids in the blood and maintain healthy blood pressure. That’s being said when we get more salt than need, that can lead to higher blood pressure in the long run and by the same token a heart attack and osteoporosis. Too much salt can also affect the kidneys, the heart and cause fluid retention Eating less salt obviously lowers our blood pressure.

The key is therefore to consume less salt or just salt with less sodium.

Women in the villages of West Cameroon wrap small quantities of table salt in a thin layer of the banana tree trunk. These wrapped amounts of salt, as seen in the first image, are then placed in an attic in a traditional kitchen above the wood fire for several days.

This process reduces considerably the sodium in the salt. That’s why our smoked salt is good for you. This also explains why this salt is widely used in West Cameroon by people who are suffering from diabetes.

Because the salt is covered with a layer of a tree trunk, it does not have neither a “smoky” color nor a strong smoky aroma. The particularity of this salt is that it is much less salty, thus contains less sodium than conventional salt and it has a slightly refined taste.
